North Carolina Saves Announces 2,000 Savers
have Joined Statewide Campaign
In just eight
months after the official campaign kickoff, the 2,000th NC Saver
enrolled in the statewide campaign. NC Saves is a statewide
effort to help individuals and families save and build wealth.
Popular savings goals have included establishment of an
emergency fund, homeownership, higher education and retirement.
This statewide
coalition is made up of numerous nonprofit and community groups
that provide financial literacy to lower income families. They
link NC Savers that request a wealth coach with a trained
volunteer that can answer many questions on savings accounts,
investing or wealth building.
NC Savers also are
eligible for free savings accounts at participating banks and
credit unions. Statewide partners include RBC Centura, Wachovia,
First Citizens Bank, SunTrust and Fidelity Bank. Many regional
and local banks and credit unions are also offering free savings
accounts to NC Savers. Free savings accounts feature minimum
balance requirements of no greater than $25. Many accounts can
be opened with just $1. Also, monthly maintenance fees are
waived for at least 12 months to allow for savers to build their
balances fee-free.
